Se han contabilizado 172 especies, de las que medio centenar son nidificantes. Entre ellas figuran la cerceta pardilla, una de las aves más amenazadas de Europa y la malvasía cabeciblanca, también en peligro de extinción, así como garzas, anátidas y limícolas de varias especies, y flamencos. En el medio acuático encontramos la anguila, el mújol, la carpa y el fartet común, un pequeño pez endémico del Mediterráneo español.

La abundancia y diversidad de las aves de El Hondo ha permitido catalogar este espacio como humedal de importancia internacional. Incluido en la lista RAMSAR de protección de zonas húmedas y en la directiva ZEPA de la Unión Europea. Hoy es uno de los Parques Naturales más importante de la Comunidad Valenciana.

Estamos ante un parque natural de 2.387 hectáreas, curioso puesto que fue la mano del hombre el que lo creó a principio del pasado siglo. Fue gracias Riegos de Levante cuando conformó los embalses de El Hondo ocupando parte de la antigua albufera de Elche. La función principal de estos embalses era y es la de ser una reserva de agua para el regadío de 30.000 hectáreas de cultivos. Parque natural y cultivos una simbiosis perfecta que ha desarrollado un maravilloso ecosistema.
Para Riegos de Levante el compromiso con El Hondo va más allá de un parque natural. Es hondo es parte esencial de Riegos de Levante y lo cuidamos día a día.

Ens trobem davant d’un paratge molt especial, un entramat de canyís, branquillons i saladars immersos en un horitzó de cultius i palmerars, que conformen un paisatge excepcional.

Disposes de diverses passarel·les i observatoris que et permetran conéixer uns quants racons del parc i observar l’activitat de les nombroses aus tant en els embassaments com en els cels, en els que es disfruta d’extraordinaris capvespres.

S’han comptabilitzat 172 espècies, de les que mig centenar fan nius. Entre elles figuren la rosseta, una de les aus més amenaçades d’Europa i l’ànec capblanc, també en perill d’extinció, així com agrons, anàtids i limícolas de diverses espècies, i flamencs. En el medi aquàtic trobem l’anguila, la llissa, la carpa i el fartet comú, un xicotet peix endèmic del Mediterrani espanyol.

L’abundància i diversitat de les aus d’El Fondo ha permés catalogar este espai com a aiguamoll d’importància internacional. Inclòs en la llista RAMSAR de protecció de zones humides i en la directiva ZEPA de la Unió Europea. Hui és un dels Parcs Naturals més important de la Comunitat Valenciana

Estem davant d’un parc natural de 2.387 hectàrees curiós, ja que va ser la mà de l’home el que ho va crear a principi del passat segle. Va ser gràcies a Riegos de Levante quan va conformar els embassaments d’El Fondo ocupant part de l’antiga albufera d’Elx. La funció principal d’estos embassaments era i és la de ser una reserva d’aigua per al regadiu de 30.000 hectàrees de cultius. Parc natural i cultius una simbiosi perfecta que ha desenrotllat un meravellós ecosistema.
Per a Riegos de Levante el compromís amb El Fondo va més enllà d’un parc natural. És fondo és part essencial de Riegos de Levante i ho cuidem dia a dia.
